But first we'd like you to understand a few things about digital video. There are two different connectors commonly in use, DVI and HDMI.

DVI is purely video, HDMI is video and audio.

DVI and HDMI are identical with respect to video signals, they just have different shaped plugs.

Therefore, a DVI to HDMI cable works with no conversion needed, so even if you have HDMI outputs with DVI inputs you're still getting the full digital picture.

However, you will not get audio when you mix DVI inputs/outputs. For most purposes, this is not a problem, as you don't use the display device for audio anyhow - you use your amplifier. Some of the switches have audio breakouts, so you can use optical fibre or coaxial digital audio with DVI.
